I had listened to a few songs of Beastmilk on Youtube before going to the gig, and had especially noted the singer’s ethereal voice. I was rather surprised that the vocal duties were performed by Kvohst, better known from both Dødheimsgard and Hexvessel. He sounded a lot like Danzig, and Beastmilk does have that Misfits vibe quite often. Their performance was very fluid and moody, but also had that punk momentum which kept the gig going. Add some weird progressive drumming and the whole is a a definite must-see for fans of Beastmilk, as they proudly proclaim on their EP cover.
Not surprisingly, Solstafir started with slow atmospheric material, and then switched gears for a more rock beat. Even though I’ve listened to the guys before quite a bit, it’s always somehow amusing when the vocalist first starts singing due to his unique singing style. The sound was pretty much incredible from the beginning, being both clear and heavy enough, but with the wall of sound intact. That’s quite an impressive feat at Nosturi. While mostly being dreamy and moody, e.g. with the weather broadcast being read in Icelandic, there were some great aggressive moments, especially when the drummer started doing his jackhammer doublebasses. The well-rounded set came to an end with Kvohst coming on stage and sharing an emotional duet with the band. All-in-all a very enjoyable evening with a broad spectrum of emotions.
