Insomnium + Black Sun Aeon + Superdeathflame - 11/5/2011 - Nosturi - Helsinki

There was a huge line already before the first band, which was really suprising. The gig sold out just as I entered, so the place was going to be packed. That’s never a good thing, since a full Nosturi gets really hot and really claustrophobic really fast.
The first band was the stupidly named Superdeathflame, which played okay-ish melodic metal. They had some good songs, but nothing noteworthy, or anything that would have stuck to my mind for even minutes after their gig ended. If they also have some ideas of their own in the future they might become something, but at the moment they are mostly Insomnium Light.
Next up was Black Sun Aeon, one of Tuomas Saukkonen’s many projects. He handles drums and vocals, which leaves the main stage rather barren, with only a guitarist and a bass player standing at the sides, leaving a gaping hole where the vocalist usually stands. This sure as hell doesn’t do much for their live charisma, which there was none to be seen. They did have a female guest vocalist (Janica Lönn) doing some of the songs, which did give the audience at least some live show, but still the whole act was just so bland. The songs were boring and they played them like they were office workers taking care of their boring desk jobs.
When it was finally time for the main act, Insomnium, the last of their guitar player Ville Vänni, my fears had come to pass; the place was waaaay too full for anyone’s comfort. The mood was brooding as the intro began. They began their set with new songs, and continued on to “Where the Last Wave Broke”. People were excited and clapping along, but for me it was quite a disappointment. The sounds were crap, the mixing was off and you hardly could make out even what song they were playing. Add to this the most frozen performance from the guys that usually do great live shows plus the awful heat and lack of oxygen at Nosturi and we get a really horrid gig. I only lasted about halfway through their set until I decided to retire for the night. Maybe next time guys, maybe next time..
