In this surprisingly warm beginning of winter, here we are once again at Tavastia to see the duo Callisto/Crib45, which played together already a few months ago, at that time in the nearby Dante’s Highlight. To open this extremely atmospherical evening there should have been Oranssi Pazuzu, but at the last moment their appearence has been cancelled due to sickness.
As their replacement, Kilt. (yes, with the final “.”) did a good job. In front of a generally quiet and focused audience (in these kind of concerts there’s little room for non-stop headbanging and raging mosh-pits, it’s all about concentrating on the music!) the band offers a lively show with his restless singer, who keeps moving, jumping, and even lays on the floor. All in all the six guys make a good impression on the audience, and it’s interesting to see how the two drummers fit into the particular sound of the band.
It’s good to see there’s always some nice band with original ideas in the underground. The show ends in about half hour, and there’s plenty of time for the guys of Crib45 to prepare all their instruments on stage before their performance.
Once again, who haven’t seen the band untill now, has been pleasantly surprised from it, and delighted by the atmospheres created by the six-piece. “Metamorphosis”, their debut album from 2009, is well represented through the show thanks to songs like the opener “The Chant”, “Passage” and “Last Breath”, which keep the fans in the front, even though a bit distant, dreaming with their eyes closed as the music fill their minds.
It’s still somehow weird anyway for me to see most of the audience just standing there with their drinks in one hand (if not two), but that sure suits better for this kind of music than a furious wall of death! Crib45 manages to give another good performance, bringing me back on that concert in the end of August where the band really caught my eye. And apparently the crowd share the same opinion, which is what matters in the end, even if the show is not perfect.
The main act of the night catch everyone by surprise by starting their show 15 minutes earlier, so that everyone rushes in the main hall from the bar. It’s nice to see for once enough space to be still able to breath inside Tavastia, and even so there is quite a few people watching the gig. Everything is ready for Callisto, when they open their concert with “Dead Weight”, taken from their latest album.
Of course the fans now are even more focused than before, as that’s what they were waiting for. This, and the music on stage, creates a surreal atmosphere, enhanced by the backdrop and the lights that fall on it in a very suggestive way. I didn’t expect to hear “Jemima”, sure a positive addition among the newer tracks such as “Providence” and “In Session”. These amazing songs really got into the audience, as “Cold Stare” announced the approaching end of the gig. For the encore, “The Fugitive” allows the band to leave among the applauses, as its members abandon the stage one by one.
Once again I can safely say it was totally worth it to be here on this Thursday night, and as I left from Tavastia I couldn’t take off my mind the melodies from the show. While Kilt. was somehow unexpectedly nice, since I hadn’t heard of them before, Crib45 and Callisto confirm their qualities as live bands, especially in these kind of darkened and closed atmosphere inside mid-small sized clubs.
